Preliminary Scripts-
A preliminary script is needed for a cartoon or animation that uses voices.
A written script is required that outlines the characters and the storyline. This would include dialog and descriptions for the basis of the cartoon.
Storyboards-
Using the preliminary script, a storyboard is created showing the characters and the frame or scenes. The story board is not usually animated but is just a series of conceptual drawings that (sometimes use dialogue).
These are simply drawings that illustrate the basic story. The drawings are generally done in black and white and details are rough or limited. Pencil and charcoal are the most used mediums for hand drawn storyboards. I have a Utube vid showing a storyboard being made.
Putting the storyboard together with each frame (on a separate piece of drawing board) showing a single scene is a good idea. Each frame is numbered in sequence and can easily be swapped or modified as needed. The numbering keeps things in sync with the script. Often a frame is made for each page of script.
This is the rough preliminary concept for the future animation or movie. It is used for review and revision of the original idea.
If it is for a movie then there will be many revisions or updates before it is used as a final guide. One version may be sufficient as a general guide. It is never considered engraved in stone and the final product is always subject to change.
